Memorial Inscriptions

The Society has an ongoing project to record the Memorial Inscriptions in the churchyards, churches and cemeteries of Nottinghamshire.  The transcriptions of the recordings have been published in the Record Seeries and on CD/Flash Drive.

In recent years the General Cemetery in Nottingham, the Church (Rock) Cemetery in Nottingham, Bingham Cemetery, Carlton Cemetery in Gedling and Mansfield have been recorded.

The tasks involved in this enterprise are:

Visit the churchyard, church or cemetery and go to every grave and memorial and record the inscriptions..
Transcribe the recordings into a computer spreadsheet.
Proof read the spreadsheet, comparing it with the hand written original, and visiting the memorial again if necessary.
Photograph interesting or unusual memorials, particularly those in a non-English alphabet.
Assembling all the proof read spreadsheets into a database ready for publication.
