Monumental Inscriptions

The Society has two main projects involving Monumental Inscriptions. Firstly, transcribing the monumental inscription books from the published Records Series into digital format. Secondly, photographing of monuments in churches, churchyards, burial grounds and cemeteries and then transcribing the inscriptions on the monuments into digital format.

Records Series Transcriptions

The Records Series images are supplied as a series of high definition images in jpg format. The inscriptions in the images are grouped into cemeteries, burial grounds etc. The transcription task is to transcribed each group of images into a spreadsheet. A template for the transcriptions is supplied with the high resolution images.

This task is best performed on a desktop PC or a laptop. An application to display the images, such as Photos, XnView etc., is required. An application that can produce a spreadsheet, such as Excel, Calc etc., is needed.

Photographing Monuments

The headstones and other memorials in a churchyard or burial ground are first photographed. A digital camera that can produce high resolution jpg images is needed. The images are then transcribed as described above.

If you would like to help with any aspect of these projects please contact the Society for more details.
